Other Water Initiatives
We do not just stop at making communities water secure. We go all the way to ensure that communities know how to use it wisely, safely and sustainably. We invest in developing the latest technologies and undertaking policy research to bring about widespread and path breaking changes in the water sector. Taking this holistic approach makes our projects effective and impact long lasting. Our projects encompass an all-rounded model which besides river rejuvenation, includes sanitation and hygiene, drinking water provision, sustainable agriculture and livelihood generation.
Sanitation and Hygiene
The problem of water contamination owing to poor sanitation infrastructure is rampant in India. 600,000 lives per year in India are lost to diseases caused due to open defecation, and roughly 60% percent of the country’s 1.2 billion people still defecate in the open.
Complimenting our core efforts to ensure provision of water, our team works in rural and peri-urban areas to build smart and low-cost toilets with local communities, and gram panchayats. We have provided over 8000 toilets in rural and peri-urban areas and transformed many villages into open defection free zones.
For us, just providing access to water is defunct if it is not safe and sustainable. Currently, 76 million Indians have no access to safe drinking water. In addition to ensuring reliable resources of drinking water for communities by reviving rivers, we also work with communities to install Reverse Osmosis (RO) based community filters - which convert normal water to drinkable water so that the villagers have access to clean drinking water.
Our initiative on installing RO filter follows a unique credit model where we inspire communities to collectively fund up to 50% of the project costs. This personal investment gets them involved and ensures the long-term sustainability of the project.
We consistently look to update ourselves and are currently exploring more water efficient filtration technologies working with various universities and private institutions.
Water Policy Advocacy
In the process of working closely with local communities at the grassroots level, we gain invaluable insights into the gaps in the existing policy frameworks that can be addressed for effective results.
We communicate our learnings and insights through diverse forums we attend - from conferences with policy makers to publishing articles on our water policy research initiatives. We have also assisted various state governments in water related policy making for the nation.
We enable and empower farmers to have a secure future by teaching them agricultural methods and practices that gives high yield by optimal utilization of water. We have also helped farmers establish Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). These companies are entirely owned by the farmers and ensure that farmers' incomes are enhanced without the need of mediators exploiting the farmers.
